NEED FOR SCIENTIFIC TEMPER AMONG MASSES WITH REFERENCE TO IBSEN’S AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

By Jyotsana Singh

The play ‘An Enemy of the People’ written by the Norwegian playwright Hen-rik Ibsen, provides an insight to the psych of the administration. The play starts off in a dinner being hosted by one Dr. Thomas Stockman and his wife. The play is about Stockman supervising the working of a spa built in his town. He shows his concern about the spa causing a massive threat to the city’s people by the contaminated water from the spa. This was faced by serious backlash, especially by Stockman’s own sibling Peter, who was also the mayor of the town. He told Stockman to not expose the occurrence of contamination of the water in the spa because it would have adverse effects on the city’s economy. This play revolves around a tirade brought about by Stock-man to stop the usage of the contaminated spas. This is a tale of struggle between the rights of the common people and the motives of a despotic administration. This story very well outlines why it is important for there to be awareness among the general population of any society so as to result in more rational decisions on behalf of the government. In this research paper, the main idea and focus will be on how public baths affected the environment and made the author get concerned about it, and how author critiqued about democracy?
