MALERKOTLA – STATE’S ONLY MUSLIM MAJORITY TOWN DECLARED AS A DISTRICT

A town in Punjab was recently declared as a district which led to a backlash of reaction from the public of the country. This was the town of Malerkotla and was the only Muslim majority town in the State of Punjab. This policy was termed as divisive and against the Indian Constitution as it goes against the spirit of secularism as guaranteed by The Preamble of our Constitution. This decision was further condemned for being discriminatory and against the Article 14 and Article 15 of the Indian Constitution. The historical significance of this place was said to be the sole reason for this decision however the hidden political motive was the real reason as contented by the opposition parties and according to various public opinions. This article focuses on the historical significance of Malerkotla which led to the decision of converting the town into a district initially and then focuses on how this decision goes against the Constitution of India. The researchers have put forth their opinion and analyses of the same. An account of the opinion of general public regarding this decision of the Punjab Government and the political analyses of the same has also been covered in this article.
