MANUAL SCAVENGING: A STINKING LEGACY

The Indian caste system as well as social stratification on the basis of gender, has rewarded the nation with horrendous embarrassments and disgrace. It is unvarnished truth, that caste based societal discrimination still persist even in the most refined strata. And this difference has fuelled several caste-based professions and practices for ages. Manual Scavenger, is just another fancy term, for people who clean the sinuous and stony filthy manholes, gutters with utmost conviction but still strive for a degree of identity and respect. They are ignored both by the society as well as the system. However, they sure are able to stir up a storm when they try to break their shackles to pursue another profession for a more dignified life.
